Study of the quasi-two dimensional liquid system using ferrofluid emulsion

Abstract


We have produced ferrofluid emulsions. In the absence of an external magnetic field, the ferrofluid emulsion behaves like a classical oil-in-water emulsion. Applying a homogeneous magnetic field to ferrofluid emulsion induces a magnetic dipole moment in each emulsion particle creating chains of emulsion particles. If the induced magnetic dipole-dipole interaction is sufficiently strong, ferrofluid emulsion undergoes a phase transition from liquid to solid-like. In order to analyze the degree of ordering, we calculate the pair distribution function g(r) and structure factor S(k) using image process method. We show that the first peak of pair distribution function g(r) increases as magnetic field increases.
